Value of Liberty

Liberty is the cornerstone of a peaceful, healthy and prosperous world. A free world can share all its wonders and bounties with all its children.

Liberty is more than a feeling of freedom, it is both a freedom of choice and the need to accept responsibility and protect that liberty. Liberal philosophy is actually the opposite half of the circle of life to socialism.

What separates Liberal from Socialist is the concept of Liberty and in turn freedom. In a Liberal state, active participation in community welfare and freedom to worship does not infringe personal liberty as it must in a Socialist state. In a socialist state, worship is reserved for the state's system and leader. Notably, Socialists encourage the extinction of religions that promote belonging and worship to a higher order than that which exists on earth.

Liberals believe, through experience and accountability, people will make sound choices on what is best for them and the community. It is through experience and free speech that we nurture understanding. By taking responsibility and applying our understanding we ensure social progress can occur and the choices between right and wrong become clear.

The socialist view is that the masses will never "understand" right from wrong. Socialists believe people are easily corrupted and require control by the "state" to prevent corruption. We people are considered too stupid, by socialists, to ever understand the difference between good and evil.

Ultimately, the socialist state will generate and sustain despots.
The only protection required for Liberal philosophy to survive is individual accountability, the backbone of our legal system and of the democratic world. Accountability is only relevant where you are free to choose and make decisions.

Thomas Jefferson once said “Arbitrary power is most easily established on the ruins of liberty" He also later said, "those who give up liberty in order to gain security will not have nor do they deserve either one."

So in a Liberal society we can not shirk responsibility towards others in our world community. It requires a strong, swift concerted course of action against destroyers of personal freedom, free trade and individual's right to choice. The legal and democratic system, run by the community must protect the community against monopolies, either state or privately owned, against despots either, national or international.

The natural instinct of Man is to crave freedom. A socialist state requires the absence of independent thought or freedom for the "nanny" state to function. It leads to a select cadre choosing its own leaders. It leads to a one party nation or world where we all do as we are told. It is a state that encourages protectionism of the inefficient that can kill free trade.

Free trade is an essential ingredient to a world where all can share in prosperity, where if you can work, you are rewarded without protectionist barriers diverting revenue to the inefficient. So no member of the community is rewarded for inefficient activity that consumes more resources than it produces.

This efficiency includes free floating currencies, has the power to generate great wealth, sufficient to fund great causes and lift conditions for those less fortunate. A good example is the free world response to the 2005 Tsunami relief in S E Asia. It is a world rich enough to replace fossil burning technologies and offer protection to the environment.

An essential part of a democratic, multi party world of free trade is a free and open multi channel media.
